The EdmONtON Hash House Harriers
Annual Red Dress Run

A Drinking club with a running problem!

Hashers Grace a Mormon Temple during the 2008 Red Dress Run

The 2008 Red Dress run was a huge success raising well over $35,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation....Congratulations to all who contributed in making this happen!....

What is the Red Dress Run?:
The Red Dress run is the Edmonton Hash House Harriers biggest annual event with over 200 runners. Male and female runners alike, don red dresses and run (and party) on the premise of supporting a charity. The run is followed by beer drinking, dinner, a charity auction and the ledgendary red dress dance.

The 2008 Red Dress Run Charity was:

The Edmonton and Northern Alberta Chapter
of the Canadian
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common, fatal genetic disease affecting young Canadians. CF is a multi-organ disease affecting primarily the lungs and the digestive system. In the lungs, CF causes severe breathing problems. A build-up of thick mucus makes it difficult to clear bacteria and leads to cycles of infection and inflammation, which damage the delicate lung tissues. They must follow a demanding daily routine of physical therapy to keep the lungs free of congestion and infection.

In the digestive tract, CF makes it extremely difficult to digest and absorb adequate nutrients from food. Thick mucus blocks the ducts of the pancreas, preventing enzymes from reaching the intestines to digest food. Therefore, persons with CF must consume a large number of artificial enzymes (on average 20 pills a day) with every meal and snack, to help them absorb adequate nutrition from their food.

It is estimated that one in every 3,600 children born in Canada has CF.

At the present time, approximately 3,500 children, adolescents, and adults with cystic fibrosis attend specialized CF clinics.

The CF Edmonton and Northern Alberta chapter is based on fundraising in the community. They have built a center of excellence for cystic fibrosis care and treatment in Edmonton. Thanks to advances in reasearch and treatment, life expectancy of persons with CF has increased over the past few decades from 22 to 37 years of age. Funds raised from the Red Dress Run 2008 will be used to enhance the care and treatment of persons with CF in Edmonton and its surrounding areas.

May is Cystic fibrosis month. The RDR committee invites all hashers to help give "the breath of life" to persons with cystic fibrosis by supporting the Red Dress Run on May 10th.
